RANGIFER TARANDUS

Exhibition: Svavarssafn 1.03. - 1.06. 2024

Saint Hubert is lost in the dark woods of the East, hunting. He knows that this forest only grows inside him and that is why he is lost. And in the forest he sees open moors, he sees a receding glacier, he sees eroded rocks, a whale coming up for air, he sees a colony of plants, he sees the forest again. Saint Hubert pictures the deforestation within himself and his eyes are dazzled by a blinding light. Then the stag appears in the glare and a cross in glowing flames hovers between its antlers. On the cross hangs a man who is not Christ but himself. Hubert knows at this moment that he is no longer lost, he has found the holy city within himself, the city of the heart with its bloody streets. He has found Jerusalem and the stag will reclaim his soul from him.
